In a repeat of the 2018 World Championships final, Great Britain beat the United States in the men’s final Group D match. IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships – Dubai 2022 Wednesday here.
This is the most anticipated tournament game in the halls of the World Trade Center as both teams want to play in the finals of the tournament.
Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champions USA appeared poised to avenge their last world final loss, leading at the start of the match before Great Britain was stopped.
The leaders changed hands several times in a tight game, with Great Britain gaining the upper hand from the start of the second period (22-20, 16-10, 17-13).
“It’s the first time playing against them after a long time. They’re our biggest rivals. They’re an experienced team; it’s always like playing chess with them. It’s great to compete against them,” Philip Pratt said he was the top scorer for the British team with 30 points.
Great Britain, who top Group D with three wins, take on South Korea, while the US take on Argentina in the last-16 on Thursday.
German Eye First Medal
Germany beat Thailand 99-45, beating Thailand 99-45 in their previous league match, and will seek their first medal at the World Championships.
The German men’s team, a two-time silver medalist at the European Championships, had 16 points from Mathias Guntner. They next face hosts United Arab Emirates in Thursday’s round of 16.
German team captain and three-time Paralympian Jan Haller said:
“We wanted to be at the top of the group. I’m happy with the way we finished the group. We had seven players score in double figures today.
“We’re just trying to be in the moment. We have dreams, but first, we have to work. Winning the next game is the next goal. Our focus for the next 24 hours is to win the last 16.”
“We have a good chemistry; we’ve been playing for a long time. We also have newcomers in the team here, we have a lot of attacking quality, and we’re very difficult to defend,” Haller said, highlighting their strong presence in Germany. The youth system, which helped them create a balanced team.
South Korea’s first win
It follows South Korea’s first victory at the 2022 World Championships in Dubai in a thrilling Group C match. South Korea beat France 66-64 with a rousing performance in the final period after trailing in the third quarter.
Seung Hyun Cho scored 27 points and Nicolas Jouanserre added 26 for France, but it was still not enough for the team to advance.
“We are very happy with our first win. Our team has a lot of newcomers who have some good experience. We believe we have to win this game; we trust each other and have the confidence to make it happen,” said South Korea’s said Dong Gil Yang, who had 12 rebounds and nine assists.
Meanwhile, Iran ended the league stage in third place thanks to an effort from Omid Hadiazhar, who beat Iraq 83-41 in the final Group D match. Hadiyazar was the game’s top scorer with 23 points.
“Our goal is to be in the top eight of the tournament. I’m happy with how the lads are doing in the tournament because my team didn’t have a friendly match before the tournament. We’re going game by game,” Iran coach Mohammad Rey said. Za Dastyar said.
