Ukraine said on Friday it shot down a nighttime barrage of 13 cruise missiles fired by Russian forces targeting an airport in the west of the country.
The Ukrainian Air Force stated on social media: “On June 23, 13 cruise missiles of the occupiers were destroyed… The target of this attack was a military airfield in the Khmelnytsky region.”
Russia has launched wave after wave of airstrikes with cruise missiles and attack drones throughout the winter, prompting Kiev to call on its Western allies to bolster their air defenses.
“Around midnight, four Tu-95MS bombers were launched from the Caspian Sea,” the Air Force statement said.
Khmelnytsky Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn, who reported the bombing in the town’s prewar population of about 275,000, praised Ukraine’s air defenses.
Ukraine also said it shot down a Russian surveillance drone overnight.
