NATO chief: ‘Encouraging’ to see Ukrainian troops liberate more territory – but ‘we should not underestimate Russia’
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has been responding to Russian Defense Minister Shoigu’s announcement that he will order his troops to withdraw from Kherson.
“It is encouraging to see how the brave Ukrainian army was able to liberate more Ukrainian territory,” Stoltenberg said during a meeting with British Prime Minister Sunak in Downing Street.
“Victories and gains for the Ukrainian Armed Forces belong to the brave and courageous Ukrainian soldiers, but of course the support they receive from the UK, NATO allies and partners is also essential.”
Asked later in an interview with Sky News about Kherson’s retreat, he said: “It’s part of the overall pattern or picture we’ve seen over the last month, Russia has completely lost momentum.”
“But we shouldn’t underestimate Russia, they are still capable,” he added.
“We’ve seen drones, we’ve seen missile strikes. It shows that Russia can still do a lot of damage.”
Following the meeting with Mr Sunak, a Downing Street spokesman said the pair had stressed the importance of continuing to support Ukraine’s sovereignty.
“(Stoltenberg) thanked the British Prime Minister for his support of Ukraine, who confirmed that he will continue under his leadership for as long as needed,” the spokesman said in a statement.
