A Ukrainian fighter pilot didn’t let a bloody face get in the way of taking a selfie after ejecting from his MiG-29. Major Vadim Voroshilov, better known by his call sign “Kalaya,” took the photo from under his parachute while jumping from a jet plane over central-western Ukraine, according to Forbes.
Ukrainian media reported that Vadym Voroshylov was ejected on October 12 during a nighttime battle with an Iranian-made suicide drone — but the video was only released this week. He was injured when fragments of a destroyed drone penetrated his cockpit and hit him in the cheek and neck.
Vadym Voroshylov received the title of “Hero of Ukraine” and the Gold Star from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
A Ukrainian MiG-29 pilot took pictures of himself while parachuting after being hit by debris from a destroyed drone. Blood washed over Vadym Voroshylov’s face and filled his eyes as the parachute opened as he pulled the ejection handle.
On the way down, he decided to capture the moment with a shocking selfie.
“Let me put it succinctly, no one, nothing will break us!” the pilot wrote on his Instagram page, where he posted the gory image.
In July 2021, he was one of several pilots who refused to extend their five-year military contracts, Forbes reported. Months later, Voroshilov rejoined the Air Force following the Russian invasion, the report said.
