September 26 (UPI) – Secretary General of the United Nations Anthony Guterres Urge all countries to abolish nuclear weapons as Russian President Vladimir Putin Ukraine.
Guterres made his remarks On Monday, the United Nations General Assembly held a special session on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which has been commemorated every year since 2013, and presented his new peace agenda.
“The Cold War wiped out humanity in minutes. Now, decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, we can hear the rattle of nuclear sabers again,” Guterres told the UN General Assembly.
“The era of nuclear blackmail must end. The idea that any country can win a nuclear war is crazy.”
“Nuclear disarmament is not a utopian dream. I urge all countries to de-escalate tensions, reduce risks and forge a new consensus on permanently eliminating the nuclear threat,” Guterres tweet after his speech. “Eliminating these death devices is possible and necessary.”

Putin also said he was partially mobilizing hundreds of thousands of Russian reservists to strengthen Ukraine’s military, in what is believed to be Russia’s first mobilization since World War II.
The United States called the military aggression “heinous” and urged the United Nations to counter Moscow’s military action and support Ukraine.
UN member states are frustrated by “the slow pace of disarmament” and are concerned that “even the use of a single nuclear weapon could have catastrophic humanitarian consequences, let alone a regional or global nuclear war,” Guterres said.
Last month, the parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons failed to reach an agreement.
“We are disappointed – but we will not give up,” Guterres said. “I urge all nations to use all avenues of dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation to defuse tensions, reduce risk and eliminate the nuclear threat.”
“My new peace agenda calls for meaningful disarmament and a consensus on the multiple threats before us,” Guterres said.
“I pledge to work closely with all Member States to forge a new consensus on how together we can defuse these threats and achieve our shared goals of peace.”
“Any use of nuclear weapons would trigger a humanitarian apocalypse,” Guterres warned. “We need to take a step back.”
“Nuclear weapons are the most destructive force ever created,” he said. “Eliminating them would be the greatest gift we can give to future generations.”
