United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues humanitarian relief to drought-affected people in Somalia

The UAE, through its humanitarian agencies and in collaboration with the Somali Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA) and other authorities, continues to reach out to local residents and displaced people in the areas most affected by the drought, including the Mahas and Mataban areas in Hiran province Distributing aid supplies, Hir Shabelle Region.

The aid is part of an effort to distribute more than 1,000 tons of relief supplies to the Somali people. It arrived at the port of Mogadishu on an Emirati aid boat to help meet the needs of some 2.5 million people affected by the drought.

Food and relief supplies have been distributed to more than 1,330 displaced and affected families in the Ballard district of Hershbelle Region, more than 400 families in the city of Hudur and 470 families in Baidoa, the capital of South West Somalia. The aid is part of a programme to distribute relief supplies in partnership with relevant Somali ministries and agencies, most notably the Somali Disaster Management Authority.

Somalia is one of the worst-affected countries in the Horn of Africa, and the region is currently suffering from drought. Somalia is facing the worst drought in decades, with warnings of the drought turning into famine. The United Nations World Meteorological Organization predicts the country will have its fifth consecutive failed rainy season.

According to estimates by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 7 million Somalis face humanitarian challenges and require food assistance.
