The US Coast Guard (USCG) has saved a man stranded on uninhabited Cay Sal near the Bahamas for three days. The man’s sailboat broke during an expedition. He was handed over to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force “in good health.” The rescue occurred on August 18, per an official USCG statement.
The man, a 64-year-old Bahamian, was spotted by Coast Guard Air Station Miami Auxiliary aircrew.
The crew saw a “disabled sailboat firing flares” near Cay Sal, a 2,000-square-mile area between Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Food, water, and communication were provided to the stranded man.
He revealed he was stranded for three days due to vessel issues. The successful rescue highlighted the importance of proper safety equipment on vessels. A similar incident involved a 25-year-old, Charles Gregory, who was rescued by the USCG after his fishing trip went awry off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida.
