US cinemas to halve ticket prices for one day this weekend

Missed out on “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer”? This Sunday, catch up for just $4 per ticket at movie theaters nationwide. Theatre owners announced the second annual National Cinema Day, taking place on Sunday, August 27. For this special day, all movies, formats, and showtimes will be priced at $4 at participating theaters.

Over 3,000 theaters are taking part, including major chains like AMC and Regal, covering a substantial portion of US cinemas.

This event, organized by the Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit linked to the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO), follows the success of last year’s inaugural National Cinema Day.

In 2022, around 8.1 million moviegoers bought $3 tickets on Saturday, September 3, making it the most attended day of the year for theaters, and the average movie ticket in 2022 cost $10.53.

The popularity of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” has contributed to a successful August box office this year, reaching $3.8 billion in ticket sales, a 16.6% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

Unlike last year’s limited offerings, this year’s National Cinema Day features “Barbie” in its fifth week, the second week of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ($717.8 million worldwide), the DC Comics film “Blue Beetle,” and new releases like “Gran Turismo,” “Golda,” “Bottoms,” and “Retribution.” Additionally, studios will showcase sneak peeks of their upcoming fall releases before each screening.
