American sports journalist Grant Wahl, who covered the World Cup, died Friday in Qatar, according to NPR and U.S. Soccer.
“NPR can confirm the death of veteran soccer player Grant Wahl. He passed away today in Doha, Qatar while covering the Argentina-Netherlands World Cup quarterfinals,” an NPR reporter tweeted late Friday. “We are devastated to learn that we have lost Grant Warr,” the US Soccer Association said.

He said in late November that World Cup security refused to let him into the United States’ opener against Wales at the Ahmed Ben Ali Stadium and asked him to take off his jersey.
He also tweeted about the Netherlands-Argentina match earlier on Friday. His wife responded to the US Soccer Association statement on Twitter, saying she was “completely shocked”.
Following the news, details about his death were not fully known.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
