A photo of Cristiano Ronaldo has circulated in a Facebook post falsely claiming he said he loved Islam during an interview in Dubai – the latest in a wave of disinformation targeting the football star. Although Ronaldo said in an interview that he loves Dubai, he did not mention Islam.
“This Muslim woman from Saudi Arabia asked Cristiano Ronaldo: ‘Who do you love the most?'” reads a Bengali-language Facebook post shared on Jan. 5.
“Cristiano Ronaldo replied: ‘I love Islam.'”
In the photo, Ronaldo was on stage in a white T-shirt with a woman wearing a hijab.
For this new viral post, a keyword search and reverse image search on Google found a similar photo in an article about a Q&A session with Ronaldo at the Expo 2020 event in Dubai on January 28, 2020 .
Here is a screenshot comparing the photo shared in the fake Facebook post (left) with a similar photo on the Expo 2020 website (right):
The site offers a full 18-minute Q&A session with the players, who was interviewed by Expo 2020 Chief Experience Officer Marjan Faraidooni at Dubai’s Al Wasl Plaza.
In the interview, Ronaldo talked about his fitness, family and his love for Dubai.
At 3:28, he said: “I love Dubai because they treated me unbelievably (sic). I love the people. I love the culture.”
He never said in interviews that he loves Islam.
AFP previously dismissed false claims that Ronaldo had converted to Islam.
