ABU DHABI: A Kerala-owned restaurant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is luring customers with ‘Vishu Sadya’ and delicious platters filled with traditional delicacies at low prices.

Given the fasting month of Ramadan, most of these shops accept advance order and serve “sadya” at home. Meanwhile, some restaurants offer feasts within the building. However, it is forbidden to eat in an open place during the day. Vishu Sadya will be served at most restaurants on April 15th (Vishu Day), while a feast will also be offered at some outlets the following day.

The sadya platter includes upperi, kondattam, sharkara varatti, lemon/mango pickle, puliyinji, pachadi, kichadi, thoran, koottukari, parippu, pulisseri, erisseri, kalan, olan, sambar, theeyal, curd, rasam, mezhukkupuratti, boiled rice, Several types of “payasams” and salt. For the wrap, a banana leaf on which the sadya should be served will also be provided. The price of a sadya varies from 25 to 45 United Arab Emirates dirhams (AED), depending on the restaurant.

At Lulu Hypermarket, the price is AED 28.90 if booked in advance. The prices of other major restaurants are Dubai Calicut Paragon 42 dirhams (26 dishes), package 45 dirhams; Abu Dhabi Aachi’s restaurant 30 dirhams; coconut lagoon 30 dirhams; Abu Dhabi Ruchi restaurant 38 dirhams , Calicut Notebook 42 dirhams (Iftar-Vishu sadya 55 dirhams). Some of these rates include VAT, and some restaurants charge extra for VAT and packages. At Lulu Hypermarket, sadya can be purchased in combined packages, and customers can also purchase various dishes by weight.

By the way, Kerala Vishu sadya is gaining popularity among people of other countries too. These foreigners—mainly from China, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, Syria, the UAE and the United Kingdom—experienced sadya for the first time during outings with colleagues belonging to the state. By the way, foreigners try to taste sadya with a spoon, then give up trying and use their hands instead.

“Later, many of these foreigners brought people from their countries to seek sadya,” says Nibu Sam Philip, Aachi’s restaurant partner.
