“This is the largest event of its kind to take place in Abu Dhabi since the International Day of Yoga was announced in 2015. We are honoured to have Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence as our chief guest, which is expected to be Over 5,000 people attended,” he said.
There are many reasons why this year’s International Yoga Day is so big, Sudhir said. “There is a growing enthusiasm and interest in yoga, so many yoga schools are popping up. The pandemic is also not as intense as it has been in the past two years, and things have opened up. We are fortunate to have the support of the Abu Dhabi government and work with The Abu Dhabi Sports Council is co-hosting the event.”
The event, he said, will be themed “Yoga for Humanity” and everyone must participate. “This is a great opportunity to come together for a purpose. Yoga, which means ‘union’, originated in India, but it has become part of a World Heritage Site. We urge people from all communities and all walks of life to take part in this activities and continue to practice yoga to take advantage of its many benefits.”
The yoga classes will be conducted by qualified yoga instructors at the Heartfulness Institute in Abu Dhabi, he said.
Sudir, who practices yoga on her own, says it’s not pure physical activity. “It’s all-encompassing. It’s a way of life that has a profound impact on our well-being.”
Doors to the event will open from 5 p.m., and yoga sessions led by community experts will begin at 6 p.m., he said. Regular yoga classes will start at 7.30pm. The event will follow prescribed COVID-19 safety protocols, so all attendees will need a valid green pass to attend the event.
Registration for the 8th International Yoga Day can be done on any online or social media platform of the Indian Embassy. Sudir added that there is also a link on the Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s website.
