Emirati astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi made history on Friday by completing the first spacewalk by an Arab astronaut outside the International Space Station (ISS). AlNayedi holds the UAE flag and the words “Impossible is Possible” are written on the sleeve of his spacesuit.
At 5.11pm (UAE time), AlNeyadi and NASA veteran astronaut Stephen Bowen began their spacewalk of more than six hours. NASA flight engineers Woody Hoburg and Frank Rubio aboard the International Space Station help them set up their gear. “Congratulations, Sultan, you made history today,” Hoiberg said.
Al Neyadi was part of the NASA SpaceX Crew-6 mission, which sent him to the International Space Station on March 2. Emirati astronaut al Neyadi, who is also celebrating Eid al-Fitr on the International Space Station this year, sent his blessings to all in the sky – sharing a video message on his social media accounts on Friday.
Emirati astronaut Hazzaa AlMansoori served as a point of contact between the ISS crew and ground crew during Expedition 69. He was the first Emirati to travel to space in 2019.
He is closely following the mission at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. After all the action on the International Space Station, the Emirati astronauts at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) were also very active.
During the live broadcast, AlNeyadi can be heard being praised by the NASA crew in Houston for his excellent work. “That’s impressive, Sultan. You have a pair of surgeon’s hands,” the ground controller told the Emirati astronaut.
The two astronauts and NASA ground controllers have been in constant communication. AlNeyadi and Bowen were further instructed to check their gloves and Helmet Absorbent Pads (HAP) every 90 minutes to ensure there was no moisture inside their helmets or the gloves were not torn.

The ground team observed oxygen levels, cooling water, battery power and carbon dioxide removal. Al Neyadi and Bowen successfully completed the first mission to prepare part of the International Space Station for future solar arrays.
However, they were unable to complete the second task, which was to remove an obsolete component in the RF group. They had trouble trying to remove the bolts holding the ISS antenna in place. Even after applying pressure and being told to use a hammer, the two astronauts were unable to remove it.
Then NASA cleared them to forego retrieving the unit that was supposed to be retrieved from space and returned to the space station for refurbishment.
