‘Water Security and Clean Energy Forum’ drives action on climate tech in Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), the overarching entity responsible for shaping Abu Dhabi’s technology R&D ecosystem, and its subsidiary ASPIRE and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), joined forces with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy (DoE) to host today’s Water Security and Clean Energy Forum. This transformative initiative brings together government and private sector entities to address the pressing water and energy challenges facing Abu Dhabi and the wider country.

To coincide with the UAE’s Year of Sustainable Development, the forum brought together industry regulators, operators, scientists, researchers and sustainability leaders to outline advanced technological solutions ahead of the prestigious COP28. The Forum held consecutive workshops devoted to water security and technology; new sources of energy production; and clean energy production technologies. They then examined the use cases and defined the detailed parameters of the challenge through insightful and transparent discussions among executive participants across the ecosystem.

Awaidha Murshed Ali Al Marar, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, said: “In line with the UAE’s ambitious initiatives and efforts towards a sustainable future, the Department of Energy is committed to working closely with its strategic partners to contribute to the achievement of our shared goals. Although We recognize that technology plays a key role in unlocking sustainable solutions for the future, but our aim is to strengthen our partnership with the Advanced Technology Research Council and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in energy and water.

“Harnessing the potential of advanced technologies and strengthening our collaborative framework is critical to enhancing their positive impact and ensuring a bright and prosperous future for future generations.”

He noted that the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy has been working to ensure the sustainability of water resources and their efficient use. In addition to supporting national efforts to protect water resources, it has enacted regulations and policies aimed at reaping far-reaching benefits from recycled water. Contributions from multiple stakeholders ranging from various economic sectors to individuals will be critical to formulating important policies that foster current and future growth in consumption rates, including effective planning and enhancing water security in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

ATRC Secretary-General Faisal Al Bannai underscored the importance of the forum, saying: “ATRC was established with a clear mission: to redefine the R&D landscape in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE, and accelerate transformative technological outcomes for more Wide range of applications.” A sustainable and prosperous future. Today’s Water Security and Clean Energy Forum provides a strategic platform for stakeholders to collectively harness the enormous potential of advanced technologies. By doing so, we are paving the way for a cleaner, safer future for water and energy, benefiting individuals and society alike. “

Forum workshops elicited pragmatic insights into key areas of future technology. The first session, “Water Security and Technology,” examines the challenges of desalination plant water quality and chemistry and explores possible ways to improve wastewater purification systems and reduce desalination plant operating costs, including those associated with reverse osmosis.

New Energy Production examines the implementation of new potential energy sources in the UAE, such as geothermal, wind and biosolids utilization, with the goal of diversifying the country’s energy mix and significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

The final workshop, “Technologies for Clean Energy Production,” delves into key issues of climate change mitigation, such as reducing the carbon impact of hydrocarbon fuels, deployment of industrial-scale carbon capture technologies, production and use of small modular reactors (SMRs), and Production of hydrogen for export and internal use.

Professor Phil Hart, Principal Investigator, TII Renewable and Sustainable Energy Research Center (RSERC), said: “The UAE is at the forefront of driving a sustainable future in the Middle East, with bold plans for renewable energy and water security. Through strategic partnerships and As a forward-looking move, the country is accelerating the adoption of innovative technologies to reduce emissions and protect valuable resources. Our partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy strengthens the vital link between energy efficiency, water security and the overall progress of society.”

The Water Security and Clean Energy Forum, held at Rosewood Abu Dhabi, offered nearly 100 government and private sector industry experts an excellent opportunity to contribute to sustainable development in the UAE. Through collaboration, technology gaps and breakthrough solutions are identified and discussed, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
