WGS 2023: UAE reaffirms commitment to SDGs in statement with UNIDO – News

The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) today signed a joint statement at the World Government Summit (WGS) in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UAE’s National Industrial and Advanced Technology Strategy .

The agreement was signed by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Dr. Gerd Müller, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

The declaration is in line with the UAE’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and its net zero goal. This is also in line with MoIAT’s strategic objectives to promote the growth and development of the country’s industrial sector through the adoption of advanced technological solutions, ensure the competitiveness of local products, and position the UAE as a competitive regional and global industrial hub.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, said: “The joint statement is in line with our leadership’s directive and MoIAT’s drive to promote continuous cooperation with relevant international organizations. It also supports the exchange of expertise and knowledge to help achieve national industrial and Goals of the Advanced Technology Strategy.”

He added: “This announcement is part of our closer working relationship with UNIDO. Last July, a joint working group was established in the UAE, overseen by MoIAT and UNIDO. The working group will identify and develop joint Activities and projects. Collaboration, joint efforts and the exchange of expertise and knowledge with UNIDO will strengthen the contribution of the industrial sector to the UAE’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and achieve Net Zero. It will also increase the competitiveness of local manufacturers and Increase their adoption of sustainable practices and advanced technological solutions.

The joint statement covers the exchange of expertise, data, knowledge and experience, while improving existing cooperation between UNIDO and MoIAT, as well as relevant UAE government agencies and institutions. It is also strengthening cooperation in capacity building in areas such as competitiveness, industrial policy, quality infrastructure and skills, based on the Industrial Technology Transformation Index developed by MoIAT.

Areas of collaboration in the manifesto include supporting the goals set out in the annual Industrial and Advanced Technology Forum, organized by MoIAT and the Global Manufacturing and Industrialization Summit (GMIS) during WGS. It also seeks to help strengthen the UAE’s research and development ecosystem, as well as the adoption of sustainable practices and clean energy solutions. The declaration will support the implementation of a circular economy and the development of a green hydrogen industry in the UAE.

The declaration will strengthen cooperation and support the industry sector to contribute to the UAE’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net zero emissions. This is in line with the UAE’s efforts to host COP28 in November.

The declaration is the latest step in the partnership between the UAE and UNIDO following the signing of a bilateral agreement in 1988. In July 2022, MoIAT and UNIDO established a working group to identify and develop joint activities, initiatives and projects.
