What to expect at IDEX 2023, the largest show to date in the UAE

IDEX 2023 – With the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX) and its naval version NAVDEX kicking off next week, trade visitors and officials look forward to the largest show ever held in the United Arab Emirates, with more countries and companies showcasing their Products come from defense materiel on the new expansion floor.

In its 16th edition, the biennial IDEX will see the participation of eight new countries – Uzbekistan, Ireland, Nigeria, Montenegro, Kuwait, Lithuania, Bangladesh and Monaco – bringing the total number of countries represented to 65.

Some 1,350 companies will exhibit their products, a 50 percent increase from the previous IDEX in 2021, organizers said. According to the list of exhibitors before the show, companies from two countries, Russia and Ukraine, probably will not be present for obvious reasons.

Meanwhile, NAVDEX will include multiple naval vessels and vessels from eight countries: Pakistan, Bahrain, United Kingdom, Italy, China, Kuwait, India and the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE’s withdrawal from the war in Yemen in February 2020 and the relative weakening of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic made IDEX 2023 more attractive, with Abu Dhabi expecting the number of official delegations to increase to 250, a growth rate of 191 vs. percentage compared to 2021.

In the wake of the Ukraine conflict, the defense industry is likely to push for dialogue next week focused on drones and counter-drone technologies, as well as air defense systems, high-energy lasers, robotics, cybersecurity platforms, maritime security systems and secure communications.

What’s new this year

In an upcoming issue, IDEX will present IDEX Next_Gen, a dedicated space for startups to showcase their cutting-edge technologies in the defense and navy to industry leaders.

In addition, the UAE-based ADNEC Group, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, launched the so-called IDEX think tank conference for the first time on 15 February. The meetings are closed sessions and will feature six groups of defense and security experts from around the world who will engage in strategic discussions on a number of important topics.

There will also be the Innovation Trail, an exhibition-focused tour highlighting the latest products and innovations from the defense and naval community. The program will also include a new content feature in the theater for attendees to learn about the latest key industry topics located in the new Dock Hall.

Planners have created a “Decades of Defense” area, which will feature an interactive gallery highlighting the industry’s products and technologies from the past 30 years.

“This edition of IDEX and NAVDEX is of particular importance and has generated great interest as it is the largest in the history of exhibitions at all levels and is the culmination of a 30-year success story,” said Faris Khalaf Al Aviator, Chairman of the Senior Organizing Committee of Maj. Gen. Staff Mazrouei said in a statement earlier this month.

In addition, Tawazun Council, the main partner of IDEX this year, will also be present at the show and is also a strategic partner of the International Defense Conference (IDC 2023), which will be held on February 19, the day before the show.
