Meiyappan scored a hat-trick at the T20 World Cup alongside Brett Lee (2007), Curtis Campher (2021), Wanindu Hasaranga (2021) and Kagiso Rabada (2021). Meiyappan achieved the feat by grabbing three wickets from power batsmen Banuka Rajapaska, Charith Asalanka and Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanuka.

Who is Karthik Meaphan?

Meiyappan was born in Chennai and is an Indian. Meiyappan’s family has been moving around Chennai, Abu Dhabi and Dubai for years. In 2006, they finally decided to settle in Dubai, which also started Meiyappan’s journey as a UAE international. He attended Winchester School in Dubai, where current UAE teammate Aryan Lakra was his classmate.

Meiyappan came into the limelight as he trained with the team at the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) training camp for the 2020 Indian Premier League season with UAE captain Ahmed Raza. With a cash-rich league in the UAE due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Meiyapan has a chance to brush past the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Meiyappan led the UAE U-19 team to the 2019 ACC U-19 Asian Cup in Sri Lanka. He was also part of the UAE team for the 2018 edition hosted by Bangladesh. He also represented his country at the 2020 U-19 World Cup.

He made his national team debut against the United States of America (USA) at Sharjah Cricket Ground in December 2019. He makes his international debut against Ireland at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Academy Stadium in October 2021 at the T20I in Dubai.

So far, the 21-year-old has played eight ODIs and 12 T20Is for the national team, of which he has 10 and 18 wickets respectively.
