Wizz Air Abu Dhabi launches new Abu Dhabi-Samarkand flight

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is the second prominent Emirates airline to launch a new route to Samarkand, Uzbekistan in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Malakanda Airlines, operator of the recently modernized Samarkand International Airport, is pleased to announce that ultra-low fare Emirates airline Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has launched its maiden flight to Samarkand.

Wizz Air’s plane landed at the new terminal of Samarkand International Airport this afternoon with a delegation from the company on board and was welcomed by the leadership of Air Marakanda. The airline is the second prominent Emirates airline to launch a new route to Samarkand in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Anton Khodzhajan, managing director of airport management company Air Marakanda LLC, said:

“We are delighted to welcome our new partner Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, whose direct flights between the ancient city of Samarkand and the UAE commenced today, a significant event for Uzbekistan’s aviation and tourism industry The Malacanda Air team worked hard to make this happen as it opens up new travel opportunities for residents of Samarkand and the region and will attract Middle Eastern tourists to our beautiful city.”

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi General Manager Michael Berlouis said:

“We welcomed our seventh and eighth aircraft and are excited to expand our growing network in Central Asia, a key growth market for Wizz Air Abu Dhabi. The new routes in the region will be operated by two state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo aircraft recently added to our fleet. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is committed to supporting the long-term growth of tourism in the UAE, offering an eclectic mix of new and fantastic destinations. We will continue Providing everyone with more convenient and affordable travel options, we look forward to seeing you onboard our young and sustainable aircraft as soon as possible.”

For the remainder of 2022, Wizz Air will fly from Abu Dhabi to Samarkand twice a week. From 1 January 2023, Wizz Air will fly the route three times a week.

The historic gem of Uzbekistan – part of the continued rapid development of new routes to the ancient city of Samarkand – welcomes WizzAir in line with the $80 million SKD expansion of Air Marakanda and national partner Uzbekistan Airports JCS. The new airport will serve the region’s population of 3.9 million and serve as a hub for international transit flights.

Serving tourists traveling to the historic Silk Road city and its surrounding Uzbekistan’s most frequented tourist attractions – the modern facility will be able to handle three times as many passengers as before. An independent study by market research firm Lufthansa Consulting predicts that annual passenger traffic will increase from 480,000 to 2 million.
