kabul [Afghanistan]Jan 22 (ANI): At least 70 percent of residents in the Farah district of Farah do not have national identity cards, local officials in Farah province in western Afghanistan said, Afghan news channel TOLO News reported.

“Only 30 percent of the residents have ID cards,” Farahrud district mayor Mohammad Sadiq was quoted by TOLO News as saying.

At least 14,000 people in Faralood hold ID cards, while the remaining 70,000 have yet to obtain state documents, according to Farah’s National Statistics and Information Authority.

Residents of these areas say some of them are in their 40s and still do not have ID cards. There is an urgent need for the region to start issuing ID cards, they said.

“I hope they give me an ID here,” Faralud resident Abdul Hakim was quoted by TOLO News as saying.

“We don’t have the money to go to the center to apply for identity cards,” said Rahim, another resident of the area.

According to Farah’s National Statistics and Information Agency, an ID card distribution unit will be launched in the region next year.

“Hopefully in the new year, our people and everything will be ready and we will start our work,” said Abdul Karim Yusuf, head of Fara’s National Statistics and Information Authority, according to TOLO News. “

Afghans have condemned delays in the issuance of electronic ID cards, adding to their plight in war-torn Afghanistan, media reports said in recent days.

They expressed concern over the inability to obtain the IDs, saying Kabul had stopped printing and distributing electronic IDs for two weeks, Tolo News reported.

The applicants added that they were unable to register their names online due to technical issues with the Department of Statistics and Information website. (Arnie)
