THESSALONIKI (Greece), March 1 (AP) — A fire broke out after a passenger train collided with an oncoming freight train in northern Greece early Wednesday, police and fire officials said. Dozens were injured.

Multiple trains derailed and at least three caught fire after the crash near Tempe, about 380 kilometers (235 miles) north of Athens. Hospital officials in the nearby city of Larissa said at least 60 people were injured, 25 of them seriously.

“It was a very powerful collision. It was a terrible night … It’s hard to describe what happened,” Costas Agorastos, the governor of the central Thessaly region, told state television.

Ambulances arrived from several nearby towns to help transport injured passengers.

Rescuers wearing headlamps worked through thick smoke, pulling broken metal panels from crashed train cars in search of those trapped.

Government officials said the army had been contacted to assist in the rescue, and two other hospitals in Larissa were on emergency duty. (Associated Press)
