The MEA said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming visit to China will further strengthen the multi-faceted relationship between the two countries based on profound historical and cultural ties and mutual trust and understanding.
India-Bangladesh relations are an important part of India’s “periphery first” policy.
Last year was of special significance as the two countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence and the centenary of the birth of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of the nation.
Previously, at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Modi will pay a state visit to Bangladesh in March 2021 as the chief guest to attend the Bangladesh Independence Golden Jubilee Celebration in which India plays an important role.
This is the Prime Minister’s first foreign visit since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.
During that visit, the two prime ministers launched passenger train services for “MitaliExpress” – the Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri Dhaka route via the Chilahati-Haldibari railway line.
Despite Covid-19-related disruptions, bilateral trade grew at an unprecedented 14%, from US$9.46 billion in 2019-20 to US$10.78 billion in 2020-21, according to MEA.
Other areas such as defence, connectivity and development cooperation have also been boosted.
The cooperation between the two countries to fight the epidemic will continue in 2021. India donated 3.3 million doses of Covishield vaccine to Bangladesh to help it continue to fight the outbreak. This is the largest India-made Covid-19 vaccine gift to any country. (ANI)
