World News | Biden welcomes ceasefire between Israel and Gaza militants

[ad_1]

Washington [US]Aug. 8 (ANI): U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday (local time) welcomed the ceasefire announced by Israeli and Gaza militants after three days of hostilities.

Over the past 72 hours, the United States has worked with officials from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and other countries in the region to encourage a swift resolution to the conflict, Biden said.

“I thank Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and senior Egyptian officials who have played a central role in this diplomacy, as well as Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hama,” Biden said. De Al Thani and his team helped end these hostilities,” in a White House statement.

Biden’s remarks came as Israel’s Operation “Dawnbreak” targeting Palestinian Islamic Jihad carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.

President Biden said his support for Israel’s security is long-standing and unwavering — including its right to defend itself from attack.

“In recent days, Israel has protected its people from indiscriminate rocket attacks by the terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the United States is proud of our support for Israel’s Iron Dome, which intercepted hundreds of rockets and saved Countless lives. I commend Prime Minister Yar Rapid and his government for their steady leadership throughout the crisis.”

He pointed to reports of civilian casualties in Gaza as a tragedy, whether it was the Israeli attack on Islamic Jihad positions or the dozens of Islamic Jihad rockets that reportedly fell inside Gaza.

“My government supports a prompt and thorough investigation into all these reports, and we also call on all parties to implement a full ceasefire and ensure that fuel and humanitarian supplies flow into Gaza as the fighting subsides.”

Recalling his visit to Israel and the West Bank, Biden said he made it clear during his visit that “both Israelis and Palestinians deserve to live in safety and with equal freedom, prosperity and democracy.”

“My administration will continue to engage with Israeli and Palestinian leaders to support this vision and implement the initiatives I launched during my visit to improve the quality of life for Palestinians and Israelis,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency closed-door meeting on Monday to discuss the latest Israeli and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) escalation in the Gaza Strip, according to media reports citing a statement from the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour. . (ANI)
