He has served time in a Nepalese prison since 2003 for the murder of two American tourists. The court concluded that the 78-year-old will be released as he has completed 95 per cent of his sentence.

“The Prison Regulations envisage the remission of up to 75 per cent of sentences for prisoners of good character who are over 65 years of age,” the Supreme Court said in its judgment delivered on Wednesday night.

Sobhraj’s lawyers have long asked the court to intervene with leniency. In separate petitions, they invoked Section 12(1) of the Senior Citizens Act 2063 to have him released from jail. The court has now ordered the government to arrange for Sobhraj’s return to his home country within 15 days.
