Islamabad [Pakistan]December 15 (ANI): Leaked tax records of the family of Pakistan’s former army chief, General Kamal Javed Bajwa, have revealed that they all became billionaires during his tenure as the country’s army chief.
According to a report in Asian Lite, the leaked tax records come as no surprise as corruption is entrenched in the Pakistani military. The recent revelations only reinforce the idea of corruption within the Pakistani military.
While Pakistan’s top generals and military officers have been receiving state largesse in the form of lucrative salaries and other perks, they continue to act in a corrupt manner that is incompatible with military might, the report said.
Pakistani website FastFocus disclosed details of the Bajwa family’s financial dealings. The report included the dealings of Bajwa’s wife Ayesha Amjad and daughter-in-law Mahnoor Sabir.

According to reports, members of the Bajwa family obtained assets of 12.7 billion Pakistani rupees during Bajwa’s tenure as the chief of staff of the Pakistan Army. His wife Ayesha Amjad’s assets increased from zero in 2016 to PKR 2.2 billion in 6 years (public and known).
“From getting his sister-in-law Asma Bajwa into a highly paid HR consultant position with the national airline, to helping his 70-year-old brother retain a cushy Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) job in the UK, Bajwa had to be responsible for a lot,” According to a report by Asian Lite.
One aspect of the current situation in Pakistan is corruption within its military, Asian Lite reported. According to the report, as Lord Acton said, “power corrupts, absolutely corrupts”, which is a lesson learned from the story of the sudden wealth of General Bajwa’s family.
“Now Munir, a blue-eyed boy from Bajwa, has been appointed Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army; business as usual and no one will be swayed by the rampant corruption plaguing the Pakistan Army. Financial mishandling, corruption and influence peddling by generals for personal gain is a reality has been the subject of several scandals in Pakistan,” media reports said.
Earlier this year, data breaches at Credit Suisse, a Swiss-registered investment bank, exposed information on 600 accounts linked to 1,400 Pakistani citizens. Account holders include several prominent politicians and generals, including former ISI chief Gen. Akhtar Abdur Rahman Khan.
“It’s nothing new to come out like this. It’s been known for a long time. We also know about a case of a Pakistani general who fled Pakistan and opened a Pizza Hut chain in the US. So it’s nothing new,” said defense expert Lt Col JS Sodhi (retired) said.
On 27 August 2016, Pakistani newspaper Dawn published an article titled “Thirst for Land”, exposing the reality of the multiplication of defense groups and the Pakistani Army’s insatiable thirst for land.
Several other reports from Pakistan claim that the Pakistani military is using government land for commercial gain. (Arnie)
