WORLD NEWS | EU ‘requirement’ for GSP plus renewal puts pressure on Pakistan

[ad_1]

Islamabad [Pakistan]December 11 (ANI): Pakistan is vacillating between conditions imposed by the European Union (EU) and its domestic export lobby in order to save its GSP Plus status, the Financial Post reported.

Pakistan must ensure the implementation of 27 UN conventions in the targeted areas to maintain GSP Plus.

However, the Pakistani government and officials are concerned about the EU’s plan to increase the number of treaties covered by the scheme.

According to the Financial Post, the new convention will cover topics such as transnational organized crime, the rights of people with disabilities, the involvement of minors in armed conflict and labor inspections.

The EU has considerable expectations on issues such as NGO policy, child labour, abuse of blasphemy laws and climate change. While the anti-torture bill was finally passed after a long delay, other important accounts remain in various states of inaction.

Analysts expect Islamabad to return to its tried-and-true strategy, given Pakistan’s ongoing struggle to meet its basic needs. Also, Islamabad is frantically trying to signal some seriousness and progress on the issue as the 2023 deadline looms.

In June 2022, an EU monitoring mission came to the country to assess the situation. The European Commission’s Director-General then presented a list of priorities and requested details of the Pakistani government’s response, the Financial Post reported. (Arnie)
