“On June 22, President Biden will host Modi for an official state visit and state dinner,” Congressman Ro Khanna of Indian descent, a Democrat, and Michael Waltz, a Republican, wrote to McCarthy.

The two lawmakers articulated the importance of strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and India, as well as underlining the importance of the partnership in a joint address to Congress.

“As a state dinner has become the president’s greatest respect for a visiting head of state, a joint address to Congress is a corresponding honor for the leader of the world’s largest democracy and perhaps the most important partner in the 21st century confrontation with China,” the lawmakers wrote.

Earlier this month, Connor and Waltz hosted the historic U.S.-India summit on the Hill, with symposiums and addresses from government leaders, experts and Indian-American leaders from across the country.

Given that the India-U.S. partnership is based on a shared commitment to democracy and the maintenance of a rules-based international system, they write jointly with a common interest in promoting global security, stability and economic prosperity through trade, investment and connectivity, the United States and India Forged a deep friendship.

“The recent face-to-face bilateral talks between President Biden and Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed our commitment to a resilient international order that upholds sovereignty, upholds democratic values, and promotes peace and prosperity for all,” they said.

“Additionally, the Quad Security Dialogue involving the United States, India, Japan, and Australia provides a platform for our countries to engage in meaningful discussions on our shared regional and global security interests. The United States recognizes and supports India’s rise as a leading global power and its important partners in the Pacific, a place of peace, stability and growing prosperity,” Khanna and Waltz said.

If invited by McCarthy, it would be Modi’s second address to a joint session of Congress, making him one of the few world leaders to have the opportunity to address U.S. lawmakers twice.
