Victoria [Seychelles]30th April (ANI): The Seychelles Navy has intercepted high-value narcotics during a high seas operation, underscoring the key role India plays in the region, according to real-time input from India.

A dhow seized in waters off the island nation of Seychelles was carrying more than 50 large bags that appeared to contain illegal substances, Indian intelligence sources said.

The dhow and its seven crew were then escorted by the Seychelles Coast Guard to its base on Ile Du Port, where they arrived at around 1pm on Saturday

“During a routine coastguard patrol, the dhow was spotted southeast of Mahe and Coastguard vessel Zoroaster was dispatched to their location. They had to use force to stop the vessel with an uncooperative crew,” Seychelles News Agency quoted Seychelles Defense Force (SDF) public relations officer and special forces commander Lieutenant Colonel Achille Monden as saying.

Indian intelligence sources said Seychelles President Wawel Ramkarawan and other senior SDF members, as well as Seychelles police, were present during the search of the yacht and the seizure of suspected drugs from the yacht.

Ramkalawan expressed his gratitude to the Seychelles security forces including the Self-Defense Forces, police and intelligence agencies, as well as all other key collaborators involved in the recent drug crackdown which resulted in the largest seizure of drugs.

“This reflects the serious challenges our country faces in confronting the scourge of drugs, and the government and all its stakeholders and partners remain determined to continue this fight to protect our people, especially young people. Seychelles .We will not give up in this battle and I appeal again to everyone to join this battle. Congratulations on a job well done!” the president was quoted as saying by Seychelles News Agency.

Police said they were unable to determine the type of contraband seized in the operation. They suspect it is an illegal drug. (Arnie)
