NEW YORK, April 1 (PTI) — The prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art will return 15 sculptures to India after learning that the antiquities were illegally taken out of the country and sold by notorious dealer Subhash Kapoor.

In a statement on Thursday, the Met said it would hand over the 15 sculptures to the Indian government. The works date from the 1st century BC to the 11th century AD and include clay, copper and stone.

All works were sold in one go by Kapoor, who is currently serving a prison sentence in India.

“The museum is committed to the responsible acquisition of archaeological art and applies strict provenance standards to new acquisitions and works in its long-standing collection. Through this partnership, the museum received new information about 15 artworks from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that clearly indicated that the works should be transferred, leading to a constructive resolution, the statement said.
