MEXICO CITY, June 13 (AP) Mexico’s top diplomat resigned Monday to run in the country’s 2024 presidential primary, and Mexico City’s mayor said she would resign Friday, as did the same.

Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said he had resigned at noon and promised to start a nationwide campaign.

Both Ebrard and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Simbaum belong to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party, which will vote in four elected among presidential candidates.

Two other hopefuls – Senator Ricardo Monreal and Interior Secretary Adan Lopez, who is not related to the president – are expected to resign before the Friday deadline imposed by the Morena party or leave. This is to prevent leading candidates from using their positions to gain an unfair advantage. Everyone can campaign throughout the summer.

Morena has dominated Mexican politics since López Obrador was elected in 2018. But the president cannot run for re-election and has pledged to retire from politics when he leaves office in September 2024.

The departure of López Obrador has created problems for Morena, as the young party has been built entirely around his personal popularity and has not emerged as a cohesive force. Some members come from smaller left-leaning parties, some from the old ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party.

Ebrard said on Monday he would only continue with López Obrador’s plan, which the president has dubbed Mexico’s “fourth transformation.” The term equates López Obrador’s tenure with three other historical periods – Mexico’s 1810-21 Independence Movement, the Reformation Period of the 1850s, and the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917.

“Let’s build the continuation, the next phase of the fourth transformation,” Ebrard said.

Sheinbaum emphasized that, as a woman and a scientist, if she becomes president, she will set a precedent.

“Mexicans would very much like to have a female president,” she said.

Morena decided on Sunday that a series of five polls will be conducted over the summer to decide the party’s nomination for the June 2, 2024, presidential election.

The party is desperate to avoid divisiveness and accusations of poll manipulation in its past primaries. Morena will conduct one poll of its own, and each of the four presidential candidates will appoint private polling firms to conduct another four. Each has the same weight.

Voting will take place nationwide from late August to early September. The winner will be announced on September 6th. Any Mexican — not just Morena members — can be polled in the ballot.

There will be no debates between primary candidates, and governors, mayors, cabinet members or the president are not allowed to endorse candidates during primary elections.

The two Coalition parties, the Greens and Labor, will each field a primary candidate for the coalition nomination.

While the party says López Obrador won’t decide on the nominee, the president’s preferences — and any indication, however slight — could be decisive. (Associated Press)
