World News | Need to push Taiwan to join CPTPP: Japanese lawmaker

[ad_1]

Taipei [Taiwan]Dec. 16 (ANI): Tokyo and Taipei’s most important job right now is to push Taiwan to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to maintain peace and prosperity in the region and protect Taiwan’s Japan-ROC MPs Keiji Furuya, Chairman of the Consultative Council, expressed Taiwan’s democratic system.

Furuya met with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Qi Mai in Tokyo on Monday, reiterating his support for Taipei joining the Tokyo-led trade bloc. He called for strengthening Taiwan-Japan relations in all aspects.

Furaya made the remarks while he and a group of council members were hosting Chen in Tokyo, Focus Taiwan reported, according to a press release from the Kaohsiung city government.

Chen, from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is currently visiting Tokyo as part of his first foreign trip since 2020.

Chen thanked Japan for donating a COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan at Monday’s meeting. According to Taiwan Focus, Furuya responded that the donation of vaccines was a gift in return after Taiwan donated 2 million masks to Japan in early 2020.

Chen also thanked Furaya for supporting Taiwan’s bid to host the CPTPP.

According to money.udn.com, recently, on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, Taiwanese civil society groups called on the Taiwan government to express concern about China’s cross-border repression.

Taiwan NGOs said that Taiwan, as a democratic country with a relatively open and stable civic space in the region, should take the initiative to establish a mechanism to accommodate regional human rights defenders and civic organizations.

Taiwan NGOs held a press conference to focus on the issue of cross-border repression in mainland China, calling for the establishment of a refugee asylum mechanism that meets international standards.

The “Human Rights Diehards. Cooperate with the Democratic League. Reject Cross-Border Suppression” press conference co-organized by the Taiwan Human Rights Promotion Association, Human Rights Defenders, and the Tibetan-Taiwan Human Rights Friendship Association was held in Taipei today. Chen Jingjie, founder and research expert of Defenders, pointed out at the meeting that cross-border suppression refers to the expansion of influence by authoritarian governments overseas, and the persecution of individuals and specific groups through legal and illegal means.

Chen Jingjie said that when more and more countries realize the problem of China’s cross-border suppression, investigate China’s influence outside China, and try to strengthen their own democratic defense mechanisms, Taiwan has the responsibility to stand with other democracies, reports money .udn. com.
