Kathmandu [Nepal]December 16 (ANI): On Thursday, the Indian Mission in Kathmandu and the Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) organized an Indo-Nepalese Agricultural Conference cum Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Millets 2023 in a mixed format.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) also participated in the event, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said in a statement. The Nepali side was led by Govind Prasad Sharma, Secretary (Agricultural Development), Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Government of Nepal, to participate in the event.

On the initiative of India, with the support of 72 other countries, the United Nations in 2021 passed a resolution to celebrate the International Year of Millets 2023 (IYM 2023).
“India is the world’s largest producer of millet, producing 17 million tonnes of nine different varieties of millet annually, accounting for about 20 percent of global production. Millet has unique nutritional benefits, can be grown on dry land with minimal rainfall, and Relatively resilient to climate change,” the Indian embassy in Kathmandu said in a statement.

According to the FAO, they offer an ideal solution for countries to increase self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on imported grains.
“Indonesian agricultural cooperation builds on the ‘New Partnership for Indonesian Agriculture’ launched in 2018, focusing on cooperative projects in agricultural research, development and education. India and Nepal are also each other’s important trading partners for various agricultural products including millet ,” the embassy said.
Addressing the meeting, Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Head of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, emphasized the importance and potential of millets in ensuring world food security. APEDA Director Tarun Bajaj elaborated on APEDA’s export promotion and capacity building efforts for the 2023 International Year.
On the Nepal side, Dr. Govind Prasad Sharma, Secretary (Agricultural Development), Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Government of Nepal, spoke about the importance of millet in Nepal and identified areas for bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector.
Dr. Ram Krishna Shrestha, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development delivered a presentation on “Government of Nepal’s Millet Promotion Efforts and International Year of Millets 2023”.
The Indian embassy stated that it will continue to promote Indonesia’s cooperation in the field of agriculture and millet through various activities around the theme of the 2023 International Year of Millet. (ANI)
