ABUJA, June 20 (AP) — President Bola Tinubu has replaced the heads of all of Nigeria’s security services, a major reshuffle effective immediately, the country’s president said Monday.

A statement from the secretary of the federal government office said the appointments were made to lead the army and police as the West African country grapples with conflict in several areas, as well as violent crime.

The reshuffle changed the chiefs of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Police and Defense Intelligence.

Nigeria faces a variety of security concerns, including an Islamic extremist insurgency linked to the Islamic State group in the northeast, insurgents in the northwest and separatists in the southeast. Thousands of people were killed last year as fighting worsened.

Security is the top priority of Tinubu’s administration, which took office in May. On the first day he took office, he said: “We will increase investment in security personnel, not just increase the number. We will provide better training, equipment, salaries and firepower.”

Analysts say the security threats facing Africa’s most populous country and largest economy are largely due to limited resources, leaving Nigerian security forces often underpowered and outnumbered in violence hotspots.

At the same time, Tinubu also dissolved the councils of all government agencies, with new ones expected to be formed and approved by the legislature in the coming weeks. (Associated Press)
