Seoul [South Korea]March 16 (ANI): North Korea fired a long-range ballistic missile into the East Sea on Thursday, hours after the leaders of South Korea and Japan met to discuss the evolving threat from a recalcitrant regime and other common challenges, Yonhap News Agency.

Notably, this is the third missile launched this week. The last time it happened was on March 14.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it had detected the missile fired from Pyongyang’s Sunan area at 7:10 am.

“While strengthening monitoring and vigilance, our military is working closely with the United States to maintain a full alert posture,” JCS said in a text message to reporters, according to Yonhap news agency.

The latest launch also took place during the ongoing Korea-US Freedom Shield (FS) exercise, which North Korea denounced as “preparation for an aggressive war” against it.

North Korea launched two “strategic cruise missiles” early Tuesday from a submarine off its east coast over the weekend, North Korea’s state media said on Monday, Yonhap news agency reported.

The missiles were launched from Yongung on 8.24 in waters off Gyeongpo Bay in the East China Sea during an underwater launch drill at dawn on Sunday, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

The exercise confirmed the reliability of the weapon system and checked the underwater ground attack operations of the submarine force, which constitutes one of the other main forces of the DPRK’s nuclear deterrent,” KCNA said.

“The missile precisely hit the preset target in the East Sea after flying on a 1,500-kilometer-long figure-eight flight trajectory for 7,563 seconds to 7,575 seconds,” KCNA said, adding that “the exercise… The current operational posture of nuclear war deterrence means in different spaces. “

Meanwhile, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will visit Japan on Thursday for a long-awaited summit with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

According to the Japan Times, the leaders of South Korea and Japan will meet in Tokyo, the first official bilateral meeting between the leaders of the two countries in 12 years.

A potential thaw in relations between the two key U.S. allies could have huge benefits for the Biden administration and its Asia policy. (Arnie)
