World News | Pakistan govt urges Supreme Court to inform Suo Motu over Punjab crisis

[ad_1]

Islamabad [Pakistan], Dec 24 (ANI): The federal government of Pakistan has urged the country’s Supreme Court to take note of the ongoing crisis in Punjab. The Pakistan Muslim League (N)-led government said the Lahore High Court’s decision was not in compliance with the law, Geo News reported.

The federal government’s decision came after the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday reinstated the provincial cabinet and Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi. The Lahore High Court announced the decision after Chaudhry Parvez Elahi assured the court that he would not dissolve the Punjab parliament when he took office.

At a press conference in Lahore, Railways and Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Home Affairs Minister Rana Sanaullah and Food Safety Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema urged the Supreme Court to take immediate note of the ongoing unrest in Punjab, Geo News reported. Sanaullah stressed that if the Premier plans to dissolve the Provincial Assembly to satisfy someone’s ego, he has the right to ask the Chief Minister for a vote of confidence.

Rana Sanaullah asserted that they will not allow the two provincial councils to “fall prey to the arrogance of Pakistan Justice Instigation (PTI) chairman Imran Khan”, Geo News reported. He said the Pakistan Democracy Movement (PDM) was working hard to ensure that Parliament would complete its term. PML-N leaders said that if PTI and PML-Q had these figures, they would not have escaped the vote of confidence.

“The PDM is working hard to ensure that all councils complete their terms,” Rana Sanaullah was quoted by Geo News as saying. According to news reports, Khawaja Saad Rafique expressed dissatisfaction with LHC’s decision to reinstate Parvez Elahi as Chief Minister of Punjab. Rafiq said the decision did not meet legal parameters. He announced their legal team was considering options to challenge the Supreme Court decision.

On Friday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) reinstated PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi as chief minister of Punjab, Dawn reported. The court’s decision came after Elahi assured the court that he would not dissolve the provincial assembly. The court issued the orders after a five-member bench accepted Elahi’s plea to challenge the order of Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman to cancel his notification to act as provincial chief executive.

Chaudhry Parvez Elahi filed the petition after the Punjab governor appointed him as Punjab chief minister on Thursday to prevent ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan from dissolving parliament. The hearing was adjourned for an hour after the court asked Elahi’s lawyer, barrister Ali Zafar, to seek assurances from his client on the dissolution of parliament, Dawn reported.

After the hearing resumed, Elahi made a pledge that he would not dissolve the provincial council until the next hearing, Dawn reported. After submitting the undertaking, the court rehabilitated Elahi as CM of Punjab and asked the accused to submit a reply at the next hearing scheduled for January 11, 2023. (ANI)
