World News | Peace Efforts Fail as Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Clash Continues

[ad_1]

kabul [Afghanistan], Dec. 18 (ANI): All efforts to maintain peace along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have failed as violence between Afghan and Pakistani armed forces continues. Border tensions escalate in Chaman district of Baluchistan province.

In the recent armed clashes at the Chaman-Spin Boldak border crossing on December 11 and December 15, several civilian and security personnel were killed or injured on both sides. Pakistan has blamed the Taliban for border tensions. According to the “Dawn” report, Pakistani and Afghan security forces had an armed clash on the Chaman border on Thursday, killing at least one person and injuring 15 others. The reported armed clashes come four days after the Taliban “apologized” to Islamabad for a cross-border shelling that killed eight people on Sunday.

“The injured included innocent women and children,” Dawn was quoted as saying by ISPR. At least one person was killed and 15 others were wounded, Zahid Saleem, deputy chief secretary of the Balochistan Ministry of Home and Tribal Affairs, told Dawn newspaper. Five of the injured were in serious condition and those requiring intensive care were transferred to the trauma center at Quetta Civic Hospital, Salim said.

Government hospitals in Quetta and Chaman declared a state of emergency, according to news reports. The Taliban tweeted that Pakistani troops had opened fire and called for a negotiated solution.

Afghan forces opened fire as Pakistani border authorities began repairing fences damaged in Sunday’s clashes, a senior official based in the border town told Dawn. Pakistani security personnel returned fire, he said, adding that both sides used heavy weapons in the shootout.

“Afghan troops opened fire when Pakistani border authorities started repairing the damaged fence near the border village of Sheikh Lal Khan,” Dawn newspaper quoted a senior official based in the border town as saying.

Clashes between Pakistani and Afghan security forces erupted after Afghan forces began shelling on Sunday, Dawn reported. At least eight people were killed and a dozen wounded, including one Afghan soldier killed in cross-border shooting.

Earlier this week, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the Taliban had apologized for Sunday’s incident. He further stated that the Taliban had stated that they would take steps to ensure that such incidents did not happen again. (Arnie)
