The Center for International Peace Studies invited Mir Junaid and Touseef Raina from the Valley to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Kashmir – From Turmoil to Transition”.

The forum focused on developments and realities in Kashmir. To provide a grassroots perspective, Mir Junaid said in his opening remarks, “I can confidently say that Kashmir has been reborn as a land of peace, prosperity and progress. Jammu and Kashmir has undergone many transformations that have taken it from protesting against a progressive coalition territory.”

“We must move beyond controversial rhetoric now. Those countries that preach to fool the world on global platforms have nothing to do with the peace, progress and prosperity of Kashmir. Accept the fact that Kashmir is an existential issue for them and that is why they allow violence Burning continues in Kashmir,” Junaid asserted with a dig at Pakistan.

He asked about the fate of the leaders of the once well-coordinated and powerful separatist bloc, the so-called All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), and how those leaders faced a series of reversals one after another in Jammu and Kashmir.

“They were dealing with the law of the land, the rule of the land,” Junaid said, which led to the collapse of the Kashmiri Huryat conference.

Just then – a handful of protesters interrupted the Kashmiri militants and disrupted the forum. “Shame on you,” one protester yelled. After being questioned by security when asked to leave the room, the protester visibly lost his temper and was seen retorting with insults.

“The entire audience today saw your true colors. We saw what we saw in Kashmir today in Washington, thank you for showing the world how cruel and nasty these people are,” Junaid said in response to the disturbance.

All of this was caught on camera and the video made headlines.

Mir Junaid is the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Workers’ Party (JKWP). He is a writer and graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Kashmir. He tweets at @MirJunaidJKWP.

“You’ve seen it all, that’s what they did in the first place, what they’re doing, they’re trying to shut me up with the barrel of an AK 47, if you give them a 47, they’re going to shoot us right here. That It’s because they don’t want to face the truth,” Junaid added. (Arnie)
