kabul [Afghanistan]Jan 14 (ANI): Residents of Afghanistan’s Faryab province have expressed concern over rising coal and firewood prices as the war-torn country’s economy continues to deteriorate, TOLOnews reported on Friday.
Residents have further complained that they are unable to heat their homes during the harsh and unforgiving winter and have expressed their concerns to the authorities.
Zinatullah, a baker in the province, said rising firewood and coal prices have affected his business.
“The prices of flour and heating materials, including firewood, coal and gas, have increased many times over,” he was quoted by Khaama Press as saying.
The cost of coal and firewood has not increased, but poverty and unemployment have made it difficult for individuals to buy fuel, according to local officials.
“The price of firewood is 80 Afs per 7kg,” said Mohibula, another Kabul resident, who lamented the lack of fuel.
Timber and coal sellers say the number of customers has fallen sharply.
“There are no customers because people can’t afford it. Some families don’t have money to buy firewood,” said firewood seller Mohammad Hassan.
Discrimination against more than half of the country’s population continues to affect growth in Afghanistan.
Khaama Press, citing DAB records, reported that since the Taliban seized power in Kabul last year, 18 packages worth $40 million and more than 30 packages of funds worth $32 million had been delivered to Afghanistan.
Despite cash assistance, poverty, malnutrition and unemployment are at peak levels in Afghanistan.
The natural disaster has made matters worse for Afghans as they grapple with one of the worst humanitarian crises in the country’s history. (Arnie)
