United Nations, April 8 (AP) — Russia lost elections to three United Nations bodies this week, suggesting that opposition to the invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago remains strong.

The 193-member UN General Assembly approved six non-binding resolutions targeting Russia ahead of a vote by the 54-member UN Economic and Social Council. The most recent — on February 23, the eve of the one-year anniversary of the invasion — called for Moscow to end hostilities and withdraw its troops, and was adopted by 141 votes to 7, with 32 abstentions.

Russia was overwhelmingly defeated by Romania in the ECOSOC vote for a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women. It lost Estonia’s membership on UNICEF’s executive board. It was defeated by Armenia and the Czech Republic in a secret ballot for membership of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Commission.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said after Wednesday’s vote, “This is a clear signal from ECOSOC members that no country should hold office in a vital U.N. body in flagrant violation of the U.N. Charter.” .”

In the voting for members of 14 commissions, boards and expert groups that ECOSOC oversees, Russia was elected to the Commission for Social Development by acclamation – which the United States and the United Kingdom dissociated their countries from, saying Russia’s invasion and Urasion violated the law international Territorial integrity.

Russia was also elected by the Intergovernmental Working Group on International Accounting and Reporting Standards. (Associated Press)
