BEIRUT, April 24 (AP) – Israeli shelling of targets in southern Syria near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights early Monday morning caused unspecified material damage, Syrian pro-government media said.

Israel had no immediate comment, and the Syrian government did not issue a statement.

The pro-government Al-Watan newspaper and Sham FM radio station said Israeli troops attacked the town of Talat Qars al-Nafl in Quneitra province, but did not mention any casualties.

Al-Watan released a video of the attack showing what it said was an explosion from one of the targets hit in the distance.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said the shelling had targeted militias linked to Quneitra’s Lebanese militant Hezbollah group.

It said Israel struck targets in the same area last Tuesday.

Israel, which has vowed to block Iranian fortifications in its neighbour, has carried out hundreds of strikes against targets in government-held areas in neighboring Syria in recent years but has rarely acknowledged it.

Suspected Israeli attacks on Syria intensified earlier this year, culminating in an exchange of fire along the border on April 8, when the Israeli military said its forces struck Syria after firing six rockets from southern Syrian territory into the Golan Heights domestic targets.
