WASHINGTON, April 18 (PTI) Top Indian-American oncologist Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori has been appointed as a senior consultant at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Chennai Center in New York.

Noting New York’s opening of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in India — the first of its kind outside the United States — “significant,” Dr. Nori said receiving cancer treatment from the best cancer institute in the world And counseling not only saves a lot of lives, but also helps to raise awareness in the fight against this deadly disease.

Dr Nori, who received the 2017 Padma Shri Award for his contributions to the medical field, said he hopes to bring best practices in cancer treatment in the US to India.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center opened its first overseas center in Chennai last August and Dr Nori was appointed as its senior advisor in March this year.

The Indian-American doctor, who just visited Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Assam from India, said that when it comes to cancer, the first treatment must be the best treatment.

“The first treatment has to be the best treatment. There’s no room for mending. You know, something went wrong and I wanted to do something else. It wasn’t going to help. It was my wish, and it finally came true. Memorial (S Long Kettering Cancer Center) to open in 2022. In India, we are seeing about 1.3-1.4 million new cases per year. In the last 10 years, there are good cancer centers established in both private and government sectors,” he said.

But they cannot meet the needs of all cancer patients because of the sheer volume, he quickly added.

“They can have patients, but if you don’t control the number of cases, you can’t go ahead and build cancer centers. That’s the message I’ve been giving to the central and state governments,” he told the Press Trust of India.

“You have to somehow control the incidence of cancer. How do we control it — through screening and early detection,” said Nori, who has lived in the United States for four and a half years.

“I am trying to use it (experience in the US) to implement some projects in India because we have had success in the US.

“Through screening, we have reduced cervical cancer by nearly 24 percent in the United States. In breast cancer, we have reduced breast cancer mortality by offering mammograms in specific age groups. In lung cancer, we have reduced breast cancer deaths by increasing People’s awareness of smoking, we’ve seen a decline in even lung cancer over the last three or four years,” he said.

During his career spanning more than forty years, he has served as Professor and Chair of Oncology and Director of the Cancer Center at the world-renowned Cornell Medical Center in New York.

The author of more than 300 oncology articles and four oncology books, Nori has pioneered many cancer treatment techniques that have dramatically improved cure rates and saved the lives of many cancer patients worldwide.

He is the recipient of the “Salute to Life” award from the American Cancer Society and the “Most Outstanding Physician” award from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

In 2014, he was awarded one of the most prestigious civilian awards in the United States, the Ellis Island Honors in Medicine, for his work.
