WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (AP) — The Biden administration on Tuesday approved a $10 billion arms sale to NATO ally Poland as Russia’s war in neighboring Ukraine intensifies.

The State Department notified Congress that the sale included the medium-range mobile HIMARS artillery rocket system, associated ammunition, and associated equipment.

As the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion looms at the end of this month, Poland and other eastern NATO allies are increasingly concerned that Russia could launch a new offensive into Ukraine along its border.

The sale will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the defenses of NATO allies, the department said. The ministry also said Poland was a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

“The proposed sale will advance Poland’s military objective of updating its capabilities while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies,” it said.

“Poland intends to use these defense items and services to modernize its armed forces and expand its capabilities to strengthen homeland defense and deter regional threats,” the ministry said in a statement. (AP)
