washington [US]May 27 (ANI): A senior US State Department official said the preconditions set by Beijing were unacceptable for seeking communication with the country, Voice of America (VOA) reported.

As China’s economy retrenched, its efforts to become a global superpower were sidelined. China’s unrealistic targets are hurting its economic growth prospects, and it has dropped its annual growth target, causing consumer spending, manufacturing and trade to take a hit, Khabarhub reported.

China has set a GDP growth target of more than 5% for 2022 and claims to have achieved around 3%.

On the issue of China and Ukraine ahead of a meeting of global heads of delegation in mid-June, when the U.S. ambassador travels to Washington for consultations, senior U.S. State Department official Derek Chollet told VOA in an interview that there is little evidence that China Willing to use its leverage with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine.

Regarding the supply of F-16 fighter jets to war-torn Ukraine, U.S. officials said Washington is currently working on the details.

Our Pentagon colleagues are working closely with Defense Departments in Europe and around the world to discuss the future of the F-16. That has to start with training, he said, because the planes are not easy to operate, according to VOA.

“We’re still working out who will actually supply the planes. We haven’t made any decisions for ourselves,” the U.S. official added.

Derek Scholey, a U.S. State Department official, said he had modest expectations for China’s efforts.

Russia and China maintain close ties. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have apparently met several times.

“What we would ask our Chinese friends to do is use whatever leverage they have with Russia to get Putin to stop this war. I don’t see much indication that they are willing to use that influence. And I don’t see many indications yet, Even if they’re willing to use that leverage, they can change Putin’s mind. But that’s the simple question we’re asking,” Derek Joley said in an interview with VOA on Tuesday.

U.S. national security adviser Jack Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi met to discuss relations between the two countries, Voice of America reported.

Currently, US engagement with Taiwan irritates China in many ways. China has repeatedly expressed displeasure with the United States for siding with Taiwan amid China’s invasion.

The top priority for G7 leaders this time around the Hiroshima summit is to discuss China, which is increasingly seen as posing a “strategic challenge” to the region and beyond.

Tensions between China and Taiwan escalated after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last August. China objected to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which China claims is part of its territory. (Arnie)
