New Delhi [India]Dec 6 (ANI): US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West met with Indian senior representative on Monday to discuss mutual interests in the war-torn country.
West met Deputy National Security Adviser Vikram Misri and Joint Secretary (PAI) JP Singh of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA). During the meeting, the US envoy expressed his deep appreciation for India’s generous humanitarian assistance to the Afghans.
“Great to see Vikram Misri, @MEAIndia JP Singh and other Indian colleagues in Delhi discussing shared interests in Afghanistan. As a friend of the Afghan people, the United States is deeply grateful for India’s generous humanitarian support and commitment to the fundamental rights of Afghans,” U.S. envoy Thomas West tweeted.
His visit to India was part of a three-nation tour that included Japan and the United Arab Emirates. Special Representative West is engaging with the Afghan diaspora, including human rights, business, political and media leaders, to explore how to address these challenges.
The visit comes as the UN mission in Afghanistan urged the Taliban to take immediate steps to stop violence against women and the wider deterioration of women’s rights as an important part of efforts to build meaningful and sustainable peace.
The Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021 and have implemented policies that severely restrict basic rights — especially those of women and girls. They fired all women from leadership positions in the civil service and banned girls from secondary school in most provinces.
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the Taliban conducts extensive censorship, limits critical reporting, and detains and beats journalists.
The Afghan economy collapsed after August 2021 as the US, World Bank and other donors stripped the Afghan Central Bank of foreign assets and access to financial aid, and millions lost their paychecks.
More than 90 percent of the Afghan population faces severe food insecurity, shortages of medicines and an increase in malnutrition-related diseases. (Arnie)
