Tokyo [Japan]June 26 (ANI): Japan may have entered its ninth wave of coronavirus infections, an expert serving as the government’s top coronavirus adviser said, Kyodo News reported.
Experts stress the importance of protecting vulnerable older adults from the disease.
Expert Shigeru Omi came after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss the recent rise in infections across the country after the Japanese government eased its response, including downgrading the disease’s legal status to the same category. Expert Shigeru Omi told reporters that “the ninth wave may have already started” in May as seasonal flu.
“As people come into more contact with other people, (the increase in the infection rate) is also expected,” Oe said, according to Kyodo News.
He stressed that people at high risk of severe disease should be vaccinated.
“I don’t know if the number of infections will exceed the eighth wave, but we should focus on reducing the number of deaths and ensuring the continuity of social activities,” he said.
Japan has decided to classify COVID-19 as a common disease and announced the end of current border control measures for foreign tourists from May 8, Kyodo News reported earlier. (Arnie)
