MEXICO CITY, May 21 (AP) — Mexico City’s two main airports temporarily closed operations Saturday as ash spewed from the Popocatepetl volcano, 72 kilometers southeast of the country’s capital.
The city’s Benito Juárez International Airport suspended operations at 4:25 a.m. local time. Operations resumed at 10 a.m. after clearing the ash, inspecting the runway and verifying favorable wind conditions, the airport said on Twitter.

The military-run Nova Felipe de Angelis Airport, north of Mexico City, closed for operations around 6 a.m., with services suspended for five hours.
Volcanic ash is especially dangerous to aviation, not only because they reduce visibility, but also because they can be abrasive and damage aircraft wings and fuselages.

Popocatepetl rumbled again this week, spewing towering clouds of ash and forcing 11 villages to cancel school sessions.
A more intense explosion was recorded in the early hours of Saturday, but authorities closely monitoring the active volcano kept the threat at a moderate level. (Associated Press)
