Scorsese gets thunderous applause at Cannes premiere of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

[ad_1]

cannes – Martin Scorsese unveiled “Killers of the Flower Moon” at Cannes on Saturday, premiering a film about the Osage tribe in 1920s Oklahoma. Nation) an American epic of greed and exploitation on the bloody plains.

Scorsese’s latest — starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro — is one of his most ambitious yet. The nearly three-and-a-half-hour adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling non-fiction book cost Apple $200 million to produce.

Nothing is more exciting than this Cannes Film Festival this year Instead of “Killers of the Flower Moon” — a historical epic, a bittersweet crime flick, and a Great Plains Western — it seemed to meet those expectations. It earned the 80-year-old Scorsese a long standing ovation and repeated cheers for its premiere His first film at Cannes since “After Hours” in 1985.

“We took this picture a few years ago in Oklahoma. It took time to change, but Apple did a great job with us,” Scorsese told the crowd after the screening. “There’s a lot of grass. I’m from New York.”

The red carpet has attracted many stars. In addition to the film’s massive cast, attendees included Apple CEO Tim Cook, as well as actors Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, Paul Dano and Isabelle Huppert.

Although Grann’s book offers many possible threads for this story, Scorsese and co-writer Eric Roth center their story around Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio, who is his seventh collaboration with Scorsese), a World War I veteran falls in love with Molly Brown (Gladstone), a wealthy Osage family

Since the discovery of oil reserves on their lands, the Osage were at the time the wealthiest people in the country per capita. But the wealth was tightly controlled by appointed white guardians. A series of murders fuels the panic among the Osage, who fall prey to a pack of voracious killers.

While Grann’s book devotes a lot of time to the connection between the case and the birth of the FBI, Scorsese’s film spends very little time on the murder investigation. (Jesse Plemons plays an agent of the fledgling Bureau.) Instead, “Killers of the Flower Moon” captures the manipulation and murder of Native Americans through Ernest and Molly’s dynamic.

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” which is showing out of competition at Cannes, opens October 6 in the United States.
