Shares in K-pop agency YG Entertainment fell nearly 7 percent on reports that a member of girl group Blackpink’s contract renewal was in doubt.
As of 2:41 pm Korea time, YG shares were trading at 73,900 won. The stock is now at its lowest level since May 11, when it closed at 66,700 won per share.
according to exclusive report According to South Korean outlet Munhak Ilbo, Thai-born member Lisa “failed to reach an agreement on a contract renewal with YG Entertainment.”
korean media Newsom also reported YG Entertainment responded to the inquiry and stated that it is discussing the renewal of the contract, but the “Cultural Daily” reported that “it is understood that the differences between the two parties are quite large.”
Blackpink, consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie and Rosé, and Lisa, has been one of YG Entertainment’s most successful K-pop groups.
The foursome debuted with YG in August 2016. As K-pop groups typically sign seven-year contracts, Blackpink’s contract is expected to expire in August.
Culture Daily also quoted “industry insiders” as saying that “YG’s contract renewal process with the remaining three members of Blackpink is progressing relatively smoothly”.
The group is the first Asian artist and K-pop girl group to headline the Coachella music festival in the US, and the first K-pop group to headline the BST Hyde Park music festival in the UK.
Blackpink also holds the Guinness World Record for the most viewed music channel combination on YouTube, beating out US pop group Maroon 5 in April.
