For Riley Dandy, love is in the air.
The actress, who graduated from Yucapa High School in 2011, recently got engaged and starred in a new romantic comedy, which hits Netflix on Thursday, August 25.
“The trailer was really fun,” Dandy said. “This is my first full-length film in the lead role.”
Dandy started acting as a child at the former Noble Heart Theater in Yucapa, starring in That’s Amor with Isaac Gonzalez Rossi.
She plays Sophia, whose job and relationship collapse on the same day – she’s 30th Birthday. With the help of her mom, she starts over, “meeting a personable Spanish chef who may be the ingredient she’s missing,” says the Netflix trailer.
“I love the script because the main character is me,” Dandy said of her favorite “That’s Amor.”
“Most of the time, when I read the script, I’m excited to find a version of myself in the character,” she said. “And when I read Sophia, the protagonist of ‘That’s Amor,’ she said pretty much everything I would have said.”
“She’s clumsy and has a dry sense of humor,” she quipped. “That’s my T.”
Dandy, who has starred in several films and many commercials, landed the role of Sophia after missing out on some roles for the production company behind “That’s Amor.”
“I would get very close to the projects they were working on and then they would say, ‘Oh no, we’re going to go with the others.’ I’m a little discouraged,” she said. “Then they contacted me and wanted me to audition for the film, which was ‘That’s Amor.’ I thought maybe I wouldn’t get it, but … it gave me something to do during quarantine.”
She was wrong. All important calls have arrived.
“The producers called themselves and said, ‘Hey, you’re our Sophia. Congrats,'” Dandy said. “That’s fun. Just accumulating a lot of work in this moment and feeling really good after a period of not working.”
“That’s Amor” is just the beginning of Dandy’s recent work. She has three other projects to release this year. The indie film “Rooted” is a horror film currently showing at the festival, another horror film set to open in theaters in December, and HBO Max’s Christmas movie, which will also be released in December.
“It’s weird, I work the most during the pandemic,” said Dandy, who appeared in “Christmas in California: City Lights,” 2021 also on Netflix, the 2018 film “City of Gold” and 2018 Snapchat original series “Kappa Crypto”.
“It’s been a very exciting year,” she said. “With… ‘That’s Amor,’ it’s like the first rug to be rolled out for the rest of the year.”
Maybe the year will even include a wedding. Dandy was recently engaged to “The Stewardess” actor Deniz Akdeniz from HBO Max. She said no date has been set, so who knows.
Regardless of the rest of the year, Dandy hopes that “That’s Love” will get a lot of views on Netflix. And, she hopes she’ll get some hometown support, like she’s gotten on other projects.
“To be honest, the response from Yucapa was a bit overwhelming,” she said of her recent film, “Christmas in California: City Lights.” “Friends, teachers and colleagues back home have been posting to show their support and excitement about it.”
She recently posted a trailer for “That’s Amor” on her Instagram account, which garnered around 24,000 views just one day later.
“I think most of the comments are from Yucaipa people, which is really sweet,” Dandy said.
If “That’s Amor” gets good ratings, Dandy hopes it can turn into something more.
“Hopefully we can get everyone to watch it, because if it does well, then we might do a sequel,” she said.
After the release of “That’s Amor,” Dandy is also considering hosting a Zoom viewing party or live Q&A on Instagram. If that happens, she will release the details.
For now, though, the focus is on “That’s Amor” and getting everyone to watch.
“I do suggest you watch with sangria and some food,” she said with a laugh.
