According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), there are some practices you should avoid, whether you’ve been driving on UAE roads for years or you just got your driving license.
In its light motor vehicle learner’s handbook, the authority states: “The way we drive can be indicative of the way we think and act. While driving, some behaviors are dangerous and unacceptable.”
Here are 10 driving behaviors you should avoid and why:
1. Driving too fast. It gives you very little time to react to avoid a crash.
2. Rear-end collision or driving too close to the vehicle in front. This often causes other drivers to become distracted or nervous or to change lanes suddenly, increasing the risk of a crash.
3. Threatening other drivers by flashing their headlights or honking their horn. It can create tension among other drivers on the road.
4. Jumping or jumping in line to get a few meters ahead. This can annoy other drivers and exacerbate traffic conditions.
5. Not using turn signals when changing lanes – this increases the risk of a crash because other drivers are not prepared for the unexpected lane change.
6. Driving slowly in the fast lane – This practice is just as dangerous as speeding because it requires other drivers in the fast lane to hit the brakes, or change lanes to avoid slower vehicles. “Always use the slow lane and use the fast lane only when overtaking,” the RTA said.
7. Ignoring Priority Rules – This refers to the following behaviors:
• Drivers ignoring ‘Give way’ or ‘Stop’ signs,
• When drivers enter the road, they ignore existing traffic on the road, such as the speed and position of other drivers,
• Drivers ignore pedestrians crossing the road.
8. Deliberately accelerating or obstructing another driver who is directing a turn or changing direction. This caused tension between the drivers.
9. Use your cell phone while driving, even with a hands-free kit. This can reduce your concentration on driving tasks. This inattention can also cause the car to slow down or speed up, drift across lanes, or make sudden turns without instructions.
10. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “Dubai has zero tolerance for drink driving. You risk fines, jail time or having your driver’s license confiscated and your vehicle impounded. You also endanger your own safety and the safety of others,” the brochure states.
