Hundreds of thousands of flags will be raised simultaneously at 11am tomorrow, November 3, as residents heed a call from the UAE’s Vice-President. This will mark the 10th year that the UAE and expats celebrate the annual Flag Day. On this day, flags fly high in government buildings, private offices, residences, squares, parks and beaches.
In a tweet reminding residents of the day, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said: “Our flag will continue to be raised…we Symbols of pride and unity will remain . . . our flags of pride, glory and sovereignty will be raised high.”
Here are some facts you need to know about the national symbol:
1. On December 2, 1971, the first person to raise the UAE flag was the late Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan:

2. Last year, Etihad Airways sent the UAE flag into space. The flag travels at a speed of 5.5 meters per second, reaching a height of 32,182 meters. The flight time is 2 hours 52 minutes:
3. Sharjah unfurled the world’s largest flag in 2017. At 70 meters long and 35 meters wide, the flag broke the Guinness World Records for the largest flag hoisted on a fixed flagpole:
4. In 2019, the UAE flag became the largest flag to fly in free fall. The flag area is 144.28 square meters. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum posted a record-breaking video of a group of skydivers jumping over the Palm Jumeirah:
5. The UAE flag was designed in 1971 by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, then 19, when he read an advertisement announcing the same competition. His flag was selected from 1,030 designs:
6. The national symbol of the UAE deserves due respect. Those caught insulting or misusing the flag face up to 25 years in prison and/or a fine of Dh500,000.
7. The UAE flag must be of durable and strong material that is resistant to extreme weather conditions. Marking materials approved for official use in government entities are polyester or heavy polyamide thread (100% nylon).
8. The flag is rectangular and twice as long as it is wide.
9. Red symbolizes the sacrifices of those who laid the foundation for unity; green signifies growth, prosperity and cultural revival; white shows charitable donations; black reflects the strength of the Emiratis and their rejection of injustice and extremism.
10. If there are several flagpoles at the entrance of the government building, the UAE flag is always raised at the place closest to the entrance.
